The Air Force conducted a missile test from Vandenberg Space Force Base early Tuesday in order to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of U.S. nuclear deterrent forces, according to a statement from the base.
A joint Air Force Global Strike Command and Space Force team launched the unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile, which was equipped with a re-entry vehicle, at 12:56 a.m. Tuesday.
“This test launch is part of routine and periodic activities intended to demonstrate that the United States’ nuclear deterrent is safe, secure, reliable and effective to deter 21st century threats and reassure our allies,” said a statement from Vandenberg SFB.
“Such tests have occurred over 300 times before, and this test is not the result of current world events.”
A second Minuteman III launch is reportedly scheduled for Thursday.
