A Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopter was forced to land Thursday at the Imperial County Airport after a fire broke out in flight.

The helicopter from Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar landed safely around 1 p.m. and the Imperial County Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

The airport is located north of El Centro in the separate community of Imperial

A Marine Corps spokesman said there were no injuries to personnel and the cause of the incident is under investigation.

Four Marines were killed in 2018 when a similar helicopter crashed during training near El Centro.
