Courtesy of Veterans Museum at Balboa ParkThe Veterans Museum at Balboa Park will honor a member of the military community Friday as the 2018 San Diego County Veteran of the Year.

The award winner is chosen each year from a pool of nominees who go above and beyond in their public service work after leaving the military. The program, which is in its 29th year, will include presentations of awards to a nonprofit organization and a for-profit organization that serve the San Diego County military veteran community and an award for a veteran who has contributed to the military community for 10 years or more.

“With more than 240,000 military veterans in San Diego County, it is important to find the best of the best who continue to give back to their community and recognize them for their volunteerism” said Holly Shaffner, chair of the Veteran of the Year Program.

At the event, the Veteran of the Year Program will unveil the new San Diego Veterans Magazine, produced in coordination with the owner of the San Diego-based Homeland Magazine. Event attendees will receive a limited edition copy of the magazine’s first issue.

All four award winners will participate in the San Diego Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 10. To learn more about the program and past winners, residents can visit sdveteranoftheyear.com.
