The HIMARS is a weapons system made up of the M142 five-ton vehicle and a pod of up to six guided missiles.
The system, originally developed for the Army, enables the Marines to engage targets within minutes at greater range and accuracy than traditional artillery.
“We shot a rocket off Anchorage to validate that we, as HIMARS operators, can shoot off an LPD and successfully hit the target,” said Lance Cpl. Ryan Irving, a HIMARS operator assigned to 5th Battalion, 11th Marines.
The missile destroyed a land target over 40 miles from the Anchorage, an amphibious transport dock ship participating in the biennial exercise off the coast of Southern California.
