A Navy ship fired multiple warning shots Tuesday at an Iranian patrol boat that was approaching a guided-missile cruiser in the Persian Gulf, according to media reports.

The USS Thunderbolt, a Cyclone-class patrol craft, fired the shots as an Iranian Revolutionary Guards boat came within 150 yards around 2 p.m. local time. The Iranian ship then halted, according to reports.

The Thunderbolt was protecting the USS Vella Gulf, a Norfolk-based Ticonderoga-class cruiser and other U.S. ships in the area.
