The Navy will open its newest littoral combat ship, the USS Gabrielle Giffords, for public tours on Saturday and Sunday.
The futuristic, trimaran-hull ship will be open at Broadway Pier on the embarcadero in downtown San Diego from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.
The Navy said visitors should wear flat-heeled, closed-toe shoes and expect security screenings prior to boarding.
The ship is named in honor of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.
It’s the latest ship to be based in San Diego, and one of nine littoral combat ships in the fleet. Ships in the class are high-speed, agile, shallow draft vessels designed to operate both near coasts and in the open ocean.
