The remains of a sailor from Chula Vista killed in the collision between a U.S. Navy destroyer and a container ship off Japan are scheduled to be returned to San Diego Wednesday evening.

Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan

Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan was one of seven sailors aboard the USS Fitzgerald who died in the June 17 collision with the Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal.

Most of the victims were asleep in berths that were flooded in the Japan-based destroyer, which made it back to port. Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo Alexander Douglass, of San Diego, also died.

Sibayan’s remains are scheduled to arrive aboard a commercial at Lindbergh Field. According to the Navy, his family will meet the aircraft upon arrival, but requested privacy for the transfer of the body.

He graduated in 2012 from Chaparral High School in Temecula, where he was active in the school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program for four years.
