Sean J. Stackley assumed the responsibilities of acting secretary of the Navy at noon on Friday.

Stackley, who served as the assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition for more than eight years, will carry out the day-to-day responsibilities of the secretary of the Navy until the incoming Trump administration nominates, and Congress confirms, a successor for Ray Mabus.

Stackley is a 1979 Naval Academy graduate who began his career as a surface warfare officer, serving in engineering and combat systems assignments aboard the destroyer USS John Young. From 2001 to 2005 he was the program manager for the lead ship in the Navy’s amphibious transport dock program.

He holds a master of science degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
