Rep. Darrell Issa, whose district includes Camp Pendleton, on Friday called retired Marine Gen. James Mattis the “right choice” for Secretary of Defense.

President-elect Donald Trump confirmed Mattis’ nomination on Thursday. The general must still be confirmed by the Senate.

“General Mattis is one of the finest choices for Secretary of Defense that our nation has to offer,” said Issa. “Rare is it to find a leader as deeply and universally revered as General Mattis and rarer still it is to find a leader with the depth of understanding he has on the threats facing our nation around the globe. General Mattis is just the right candidate for the job.”

Issa said he was confident that under Mattis’ leadership “our men and women in uniform will be in good hands.”

During his 44-year military career, Mattis commanded the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton. He is considered an intellectual officer, known to carry a copy of the famous “Meditations” of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius throughout his deployments.
