A 19-year-old Marine from Camp Pendleton remained on life support Monday as his family and friends pleaded for help finding the person who shot him in South Los Angeles.

The Marine, Lance Cpl. Carlos Segovia-Lopez, was found about 11:35 p.m. Friday slumped over the steering wheel of a Dodge Charger in the 2100 block of 31st Street and covered in blood, according to police and witnesses.

Segovia-Lopez left the military base near San Diego on Friday and was visiting friends and family for the weekend in South Los Angeles, Claudia Perez, a family friend, told the Los Angeles Times.

Perez said Segovia-Lopez visited his girlfriend Friday and was about to drive to Perez’ home, where he usually stays, when he was struck by gunfire. Police notified the U.S. Marine Corps, which in turn notified Segovia’s family about the shooting.

Police said the Marine is unlikely to survive. His family said he’s on life support at California Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles.

“He’s a loving boy,” his mother, Sandra Lopez, told NBC4 outside the hospital. “Really I don’t understand this person who, who shot him. … The only way that we can stop crime, is that we need to speak up.”

Police say the victim had no gang connections, and it was not clear why he was shot. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call the LAPD.
