Firefighters worked through the night Thursday to contain a brush fire that blackened about 2,000 open acres on Camp Pendleton and sent smoke billowing into the North County sky.
As of about 11 p.m. Thursday, the Roblar Fire burning in the military installation’s northern reaches was about 10 percent contained, base officials said.
The blaze at the Marine Corps base near Oceanside was reported Thursday afternoon. Military firefighters were being assisted by crews from Cal Fire and Cleveland National Forest, according to fire officials.
The cause was not immediately clear, though it is not uncommon for fires to be sparked at Camp Pendleton by weapons training.
