Neither the Navy nor Marine Corps had been ordered as of midday Thursday to enhance security at bases in San Diego in response to the shootings at a military facility in Tennessee, spokesmen for local installations said.

Brian O’Rourke, of Navy Region Southwest, said orders hadn’t been received to heighten security at facilities it operates in Southern California and Nevada. The Camp Pendleton public affairs office said no updates regarding security had been received.

Authorities said four Marines and the gunman died in the shootings at a military recruiting center and a Navy Reserve center in different parts of Chattanooga Thursday morning. FBI special agent in charge Ed Reinhold told reporters that it has not been determined whether the incident was criminal or an act of domestic terrorism.

The gunman was identified in published reports as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, a 24-year-old resident of nearby Hixson, Tennessee.
