The Navy announced Friday it will move forward with construction of a $700 million academic campus on the south end of the Silver Strand to support special warfare training.
Construction would occur over a 10-year period and add nearly 1.5 million square feet of facilities just north of Imperial Beach.
The site is home to World War II-era bunker that would be demolished to make way for construction.
“This action allows the Navy to create a state-of-the-art campus that meets the evolving needs of Naval Special Warfare Command, consolidates training and operating facilities and allows them to continue their existing operations tempo,” said Captain Christopher Sund, commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado.
The Navy said the campus is needed to support growth of special warfare forces on the West Coast and maintain the required levels of operational readiness.
The Navy said the necessary environmental impact report had been submitted and approved.
