Military firefighters at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar were setting fires Tuesday to clear brush and reduce the risk of wildfires along the east side of the installation.
The prescribed burn at East Miramar was scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, as well as Saturday and Sunday, according to Miramar’s public affairs office.
Throughout the prescribed burn, Miramar Fire Department personnel will set predetermined patches of vegetation ablaze to remove hazardous fire fuel. Base officials said the burns are only conducted when factors such as temperature, humidity and wind are favorable.
The fires may be seen from East Miramar, West Sycamore Canyon and the Scripps Ranch neighborhood. Smoke and flames may also be visible along area roadways, but Miramar officials said no visibility restrictions were expected.
