One U.S. Marine was killed Sunday and 21 others were injured when a tilt-rotor aircraft based at Camp Pendleton made a hard landing at a training base in Hawaii.

The MV-22 Osprey from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit made the hard landing about 11:40 a.m. (2:40 p.m. PDT) at Marine Corps Training Area Bellows while conducting training, Capt. Brian Block of the USS Essex said.

The unit departed San Diego on May 11 for a seven-month deployment.

There were 22 marines on the Osprey at the time, Block said.

The training area is located in Waimanalo on the island of Oahu.
