San Diego County residents could hear loud noises this weekend as Marine units conduct extended live-fire mortar training at Camp Pendleton.

The exercises in the Whiskey and Zulu impact areas are scheduled from 6 a.m. to midnight Saturday, and from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Depending on atmospheric conditions, the sound of the explosions may be amplified and heard up to 50 miles away.

A mortar is a portable weapon that fires explosive projectiles over short ranges. It is typically muzzle-loading with a short barrel.
