Two Marines based at the Miramar Air Station died Friday when their helicopter crashed during a training exercise in Twentynine Palms.
The crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. during an exercise at the air ground combat center at the desert Marine base north of Palm Springs.
The victims were crew members from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Miramar. They were not identified.
“Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the two Marines we lost in this tragic accident,” said Major Gene. Michael A. Rocco, commanding general of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. “We at 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing stand ready to provide support to their families.”
The cause of the accident was under investigation. The type of helicopter was not immediately released.
