A Mexican judge ordered the release Friday of a U.S. Marine reservist from San Diego who has been jailed in Baja California for seven months for driving across the international border with guns and ammunition in his car.

Andrew Tahmooressi, 26, was due to be processed for release immediately, according to various broadcast reports.

On April 1, Tahmooressi, an Afghanistan war veteran who had recently moved to San Diego from Florida, was jailed in Tijuana after Mexican customs officers caught him with three firearms and bullets in his pickup truck. He told authorities he had ventured out of the United States inadvertently by taking a wrong turn.

It is illegal for civilians to bring guns into Mexico.

Tahmooressi’s detention while prosecutors weighed charges against him sparked outrage and calls for his freedom north of the border from politicians, veterans agencies and others.
