A military Humvee crashed and overturned Sunday on Interstate 5 near the Aliso Creek rest area, and prompted authorities to temporarily shut down the southbound freeway.

The crash was in the southbound lanes on Camp Pendleton, about 6 miles north of Oceanside. It was reported shortly before 10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers at the scene said all lanes were to be briefly closed while the Marines landed a rescue helicopter on the freeway. A SigAlert was issued for the southbound 5 Freeway at Las Pulgas Road, but no direct alternate route is available between Orange and San Diego counties.

As of about 11 a.m., all but one lane had been reopened, according to the CHP.
