
The San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson relieved the USS George H.W. Bush in the Arabian Gulf and began air operations Saturday in Iraq and Syria.
The Bush will soon depart the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility for its home port at Norfolk, VA.
The Navy is conducting air strikes as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the official name of the operation to eliminate the terrorist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, ISIL.
