A soldier who died Sunday in Afghanistan has been identified as an Oceanside man, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Chief Warrant Officer Deric M. Rasmussen, 33, died yesterday in Mazer E Sharif, Afghanistan, as the result of a non-combat incident. No details were given as to what occurred or how he was injured.

Rasmussen was assigned to the Company c, 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade out of Fort Hood, Texas. The defense department’s announcement notes he was serving in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
