According to a report in UT San Diego, the F/A-18C Hornet was on a training flight when it went down in a remote, mountainous area 70 miles east of Naval Air Station Fallon. The pilot, who has yet to be identified pending notification of family, was attached to a different unit.

The jet, which was destroyed in the crash, was not loaded with weapons or munitions during the training exercise.
