San Diego County will invite residents of Potrero to join an emergency preparedness-themed neighborhood block party Wednesday with the intent of building up the community in case of disaster.

The event is open to registered residents of all ages and will be held from 4-5 p.m. at the Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road.

It is being jointly hosted by the San Diego County Fire Community Emergency Response Team and the San Diego County Library branch in Potrero.

“Rural communities like Potrero often have fewer resources but face just as many risks,” said Teresa Greenhalgh, San Diego County Fire CERT Coordinator. “Events like this ensure that families here have the same access to life-saving information as those in larger cities.”

The census-designated place along State Route 94 in East County has a population of just over 600, but is in a windy corridor and is vulnerable to wildfires. It is less than a mile north of the U.S.-Mexican border and its closest neighbor, Tecate, Mexico.

Those attending Wednesday’s event can receive a free emergency preparedness toolkit and can test their knowledge in games like The Price of Preparedness, similar to “The Price is Right,” but contestants guess the price of five items included in a starter Go-Kit. Whoever guesses closest to the actual price, wins the bag with all the items.

Guests can also play Two Truths & a Lie, participate in a team scavenger hunt and play Emergency Preparedness Bingo.

For those who have not registered, call or text (619) 857-8050, or email Teresa.Greenhalgh@sdcounty.ca.gov.
