This community event is about more than just a haircut. It’s about giving kids the tools they need to thrive — and helping families feel supported, seen, and celebrated. Last year’s event drew over 1,500 kids, with more than 500 receiving free haircuts. This year, even more families are expected to attend.

“We’re honored to bring this event back for its ninth year,” said Miles Himmel, founder of the Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation. “My dad believed deeply in making people feel better about the place they call home — and this event keeps that spirit alive. There’s nothing more meaningful than seeing a child leave with a smile, a fresh haircut, and the confidence to take on a new school year.”
The event is open to all families and children. Registration for haircuts is encouraged but not required. All services, including supplies and food, will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation was established to honor the legacy of the late San Diego news reporter Larry Himmel, who passed away in 2014. Larry devoted his life to telling the stories of everyday San Diegans, and the Foundation carries on his work by providing support, resources, and opportunities to those in need throughout the region.
