Autistic children and young adults from across San Diego County are taking part in the sold-out annual Surf Camp hosted by Autism Society San Diego at La Jolla Shores. The camp, which runs across six separate four-day sessions this summer, is supporting more than 120 participants with expanded programming for 2025.
Each participant, age five and up, is paired with a one-on-one surf instructor aide for the duration of the four-day camp. The model lets instructors connect with each child’s learning style and personality, often leading to meaningful breakthroughs both in and out of the water. Other activities include beach sports, arts and crafts, and group beach adventures.
All sessions are being held at the north end of La Jolla Shores near Tower 33, running from June 30 through Aug. 7.
2025 Camp Schedule:
- Week 1: June 30 – July 3
- Week 2: July 7 – July 10
- Week 3: July 14 – July 17
- Week 4: July 21 – July 24
- Week 5: July 28 – July 31
- Week 6: August 4 – Aug. 7
The program continues to grow in popularity each year, selling out quickly and reflecting a growing need for inclusive, adaptive recreational programming in the region. According to Autism Society San Diego, one in 19 children in San Diego is on the autism spectrum.
The organization offers financial assistance to ensure the program remains accessible to families regardless of cost. Due to the ongoing demand, Autism Society San Diego is currently seeking additional partners and support to expand future camp capacity.
