Ocean Beach is a community consisting of a unique blend of diverse personalities. It stands to reason that when planning an event, some “out of the box” planning may be required.
That’s where Love Thy Neighborhood enters the mix.
“I’ve been deeply committed to the community through Submerge Church for about eight years now,” said Raquel Freischlag, chief executive officer of Love Thy Neighborhood, a nonprofit for the communities of Ocean Beach and Point Loma.
“We have been involved with planning the OB Street Fair & Chili Cookoff, the Holiday Parade, the Kite Festival, and the recent reopening of an OB icon.”
“Raquel is quite the party planner,” said Carol Ladiges, owner of Lighthouse Ice Cream shop. “She was a tremendous help on our grand reopening, doing everything from table decorations to running a contest to name our octopus mural.”
Love Thy Neighborhood incorporated last April, and immediately took on a major task. From concept to completion, Freischlag’s company ran the entire staging of all the floats for the Holiday Parade.
“Our organization was in charge of all 83 floats and the forms that had to be filled out to manage the day of the event,” said Freischlag. “It was quite a task, but we have a group of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers, all residents of Ocean Beach.”
Love Thy Neighborhood is planning its next community project that is sure to be a family favorite.
“We are going to do movie nights this summer,” said Freischlag. The movies will be on different Saturdays, with “Shrek,” “Top Gun,” “The Sandlot,” and “Clueless” in Veteran Plaza.
