Pedestrians and cyclists will get the run of the road in North County today as Cyclovia Encinitas returns to shut down a portion of the Coast Highway to cars from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The closure to motor vehicles will take place between D and I streets along the 101 in Encinitas, allowing alternate methods of transportation to take over the busy highway.
“Open street events are held all over the world to encourage active transportation, promote exercise and health, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Nick Buck, city of Encinitas’s mobility manager.
“We’re proud that Encinitas Cyclovia is the first of its kind in North County San Diego. Plus, cruising Coast Highway totally free of cars is just so fun too.”
The free event will feature a bike rodeo to practice skills, a temporary bike pump track, a bicycle and helmet decorating station, informational booths, a free bike valet and a tour of North Coast Transit District’s “Bikes on Buses.”
For the first time this year, guests can also participate in the Cyclovia Adventure Lab, a digital scavenger hunt with prizes.
“Cyclovia isn’t just about mobility — it’s about joy,” said Dave Knopp, the city’s director of parks, recreation and cultural arts. “It’s an incredible chance for families to come together, explore downtown and experience Encinitas in a whole new way.”
Cyclovia Encinitas is a partnership between the city and local organizations.
