Spring break is almost here, and the Transportation Security Administration is urging San Diego travelers to get ready for the rush.

San Diego International Airport will see higher volumes of people this year, according to the TSA, and travelers should be prepared.

There will be about a 5% rise in those departing from SAN compared to last year at the same time, totaling around 712,000 travelers, the airport said.

To increase efficiency, TSA officials are now allowing travelers to use a mobile driver’s license in their digital wallets at any of the airport’s security checkpoints in place of a physical card.

“Allowing travelers to utilize the mobile driver’s license is another way we are embracing technology to enhance security and increase the efficiency of our operation,” said TSA security director Kathleen Connon.

Officials advised all travelers to carry their physical identification as a backup option.

Californians also are able to use their mobile ID at select businesses.

More than 500,000 Californians have added a mobile driver’s license to their phone using the California Department of Motor Vehicle Wallet app, according to a press release from Gov. Gavin Newsom.

TSA officials also reminded travelers that anyone 18 years or older will need a state-issued Real ID or another acceptable form of identification to travel beginning May 7. A Real ID is marked with an image of a bear and a star at the top right corner of the ID.

A Real ID, or Travel ID, will be necessary for travelers without another form of federally compliant identification or for anyone that needs access to federal facilities, military installations or nuclear power plants.

TSA officials said travelers without a Real ID or another acceptable form of ID, like a U.S. passport, should expect delays at security checkpoints.

Congress passed The REAL ID Act in 2005 as a way to improve reliability and accuracy of identification.
