The West Coast is the best coast for love this year, with San Diego ranked as the third-best place to spend Valentine’s Day, according to a WalletHub survey.

The total Valentine’s Day spending projected for 2025 is a record $27.5 billion on gifts, or $188.81 per person.

“It’s common to spoil your partner on Valentine’s Day, but inflation can certainly put a damper on those plans,” said Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst.

“Fortunately, the best cities for Valentine’s Day offer a wide variety of affordable date activities, food options and places to buy gifts so you can show that you care without breaking the bank.”

San Diego ranked below two other cities on the West Coast: San Francisco, which came in at first place on the strength of its walkability, its affordable dining and beer and wine scenes, and its chocolatiers, and Seattle, which also boasts affordable fine dining and walkability, and also a prevalence of jewelry shops.

San Diego earned its spot in third place with its own food and outdoor offerings — and one of the highest number of wellness and spa centers per capita in the country.

The list was ranked based on four key dimensions: budget, activities, gift accessibility, and weather forecast. San Diego scored 72.95 out of 100.

The three least romantic cities to spend Valentine’s Day in this year were Hialeah, Florida; San Bernardino, California; and Detroit, Michigan.
