San Diego Gas & Electric announced Wednesday that it has restored power to all customers affected by this week’s Public Safety Power Shutoffs amid fire threats.
The last three days brought extreme wildfire conditions to the region and the strongest Santa Ana wind event in years, bringing wind speeds that approached and, in some cases, exceeded hurricane-strength levels, according to the utility.
SDG&E released an event overview by the numbers:
- More than 100 of SDG&E’s weather monitoring stations across its service area reached the 99th percentile in wind speeds ever recorded, with the highest gust measured at 95 mph. Humidity levels in the single digits and teens across the service area, creating severe wildfire risk.
- Approximately 117,500 customers notified of a potential PSPS; about 50,000 customers deenergized on Dec. 9 – 10. All customers restored by Dec. 11.
- 12 Community Resource Centers opened, offering services for impacted customers such as Wi-Fi, food, phone and medical device charging.
- As soon as safety allowed, about 300 field employees and five helicopters mobilized to visually inspected every impacted power line prior to reenergizing for safety.
The utility said a PSPS is a last resort tool used to reduce the risk of wildfires when conditions threaten the company’s ability to safely operate its electrical system.
