Giving Tuesday is billed as a “global generosity movement,” originating at the 92nd Street Y in New York just over a decade ago. Last year American donors pledged over $3 billion on the day.
Though global in intent, the most impactful donations are likely to be closer to home. Here are 10 charitable organizations in San Diego County to consider on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Feed the Hungry — One of the most appropriate charitable donations in the aftermath of a sumptuous Thanksgiving dinner is to the local food bank. Price Philanthropies is offering to match your gift to the Jacobs and Cushman Food Bank dollar for dollar — up to $100,000.
First Generation College — Reality Changers prepares local youth to become first-generation college graduates and agents of change in their communities. Your donation will support hot meals and educational programming for students.
Creative Culture — Vanguard Culture aims to build a thriving, diverse, and inclusive arts and culture community, serving as a creative and economic catalyst for the region and beyond. Its innovative urban street takeovers have attracted thousands. You can make a donation here.
Refugees and Homeless — Refugees and other homeless individuals deserve our support. Help them receive basic needs and find a new home by giving to Jewish Family Service of San Diego. All donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to $500,000 total thanks to the generosity of Evelyn and Ernest Rady.
Theater for Veterans — Military service is important and challenging. The La Jolla Playhouse’s MVP initiative uses theater to provide transformative experiences for military families. On this giving Tuesday, your donation will be doubled up to $25,000.
Protect the Environment — The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation in Encinitas offers classes, workshops, and events focused on soil, water and waste, promoting environmental responsibility and making green living practical for individuals, businesses, schools and local governments. Your donation will support the center’s volunteer programs.
Humane Society — Dogs, cats and other animals are just a deserving of charity as people. Your donation to the San Diego Humane Society will be doubled on Giving Tuesday.
Life Sciences — The internationally known Salk Institute supports world-class scientists pushing the boundaries of knowledge in neuroscience, cancer research, aging, immunobiology, plant biology, computational biology and more. Your donation can help create a more healthy future.
Art in North County — The innovative Oceanside Museum of Art counts on donations to support exhibitions of works by up-and-coming Southern California artists. The museum’s goals is to raise $100,000 by Dec. 31. You can also help by gift shopping at the museum store.
