Construction of the new Santee Animal Services shelter will kick off Tuesday with a unique twist — Howard, the shelter’s beloved “Chief Digging Officer,” will lead the groundbreaking with the first dig alongside local officials.
The 23,000-square-foot facility, located at 452 Riverview Parkway, will provide animal healthcare services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It will include an on-site small animal hospital for vaccinations, affordable spay/neuter services and wellness care, officials said.
The $37 million shelter will offer new animal housing, intake and care during disasters and pet adoption services upon completion in 2026.
Chief Digging Officer Howard is one of many smart, coachable animals ready to join his forever family, according to the county. Those interested in adoption should go to the county’s website.
Dignitaries expected to attend the groundbreaking include Supervisor Joel Anderson, representing District 2, including Santee, and San Diego County Animal Services Director Vaughn Maurice.
