It’s no secret that dogs are man’s best friend. When 85% of dog owners consider pets part of their family and two-thirds of U.S. households own a dog, that’s how you know the famous phrase has stood the test of time.

And the flurry of cafes, parks and even events catered to furry companions are part of San Diego culture. Which self respecting place doesn’t offer some form of a pup cup? But the debate of which dog is the most loved, has finally been unveiled by a new Forbes Advisor study showing which breeds are the favorites by state.

California’s pick: Bernese Mountain Dog Overall, this gentle giant is known for its affectionate nature and ranked fifth nationwide. Other states that shared a special place in it’s heart for the Bernese included  Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington.

But the survey reported that largest percentage of dog owners reported that “no breed in particular” is their favorite at 13%. However, Australian shepherds ranked as the top favorite dog breed, followed by German shepherds and bulldogs.
