A wildfire blackened hundreds of open acres Tuesday in a remote part of San Diego County near the border and spread into northern Mexico.

The blaze erupted at the base of Tecate Peak (also known as Kuuchamaa, a sacred site) at about 11:15 a.m., according to Cal Fire.

Within two hours, the flames had spread over nearly 300 acres, with most of the burn area situated in the United States but part of it in Mexico, said a Cal Fire spokesperson.

Ground crews and personnel aboard air tankers and water-dropping helicopters were battling the blaze, which was posing no known structural threats as of 1:30 p.m.

There was no information available on what started the fire.
