A San Diego family dog that went missing last summer was recently found in Michigan and reunited with her family.
The 3-year-old dog, Mishka, was found last week in Harper Woods, Mich., more than eight months after she went missing, according to the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society.
A Facebook post created by the family on a San Diego missing pet webpage indicated the dog went missing from between Old Town and the Midway District on July 21, 2023.
On March 28, a Harper Woods resident contacted police regarding a stray dog that turned out to be Mishka, according to the animal adoption society, which stated the dog was identified through a microchip.
One of the dog’s owners, Mehrad Houman, was in Minneapolis at the time where the family was visiting relatives and was able to drive to pick up Mishka, society officials said.
How Mishka ended up in Michigan is a mystery, but Corinne Martin of the animal adoption society told the Associated Press the dog was likely stolen and sold to someone else.
The welfare group wrote in a social media post that the story illustrated the importance of microchipping pets.
“A conscientious family microchips their beloved pet. An unfortunate event happens with the dog being separated from them. A local resident makes the right decision,” the post reads. “… The technology of the microchip reunites the long, lost pup with its forever family.”
