Caltrans announced Thursday the start of construction of HOV lanes on frequently congested Route 56 in Carmel Valley.
Crews will initially work at night to prepare for construction, and thereafter from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with minimal lane closures anticipated.
The new HOV lanes will extend from El Camino Real to just before Carmel Valley Road.
The $23 million project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2025.
Caltrans also said it has future plans to create a direct link from westbound Route 56 to northbound I-5.
