The approach of an upper-level trough will maintain continued cool and cloudy conditions each morning through Wednesday, as well as gusty west winds over the mountains and deserts in the afternoons and evenings, according to the National Weather Service.

Elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions are anticipated over the mountains and deserts with dry air expected to remain entrenched east of the mountains.

Monday’s high temperatures were expected to be 70 to 75 along the coast, 73 to 76 in the western valleys, 77 to 82 near the foothills, 75 to 80 near the foothills, 75 to 85 in the mountains and 101 to 106 in the deserts, forecasters said.

The marine layer depth will peak Monday in advance of the approaching trough and become gradually more shallow through the week as the trough moves eastward and onshore flow weakens.

Later this week, the upper level pattern shifts to favor high pressure over the Southwestern United States with warm and dry weather taking hold across much of Southern California.

Temperatures begin trending upward on Thursday and continue warming through the weekend, according to the weather service.

Desert locations see highs rebound back to seasonal normals by Thursday, mountain locations by Friday with other coastal and valley locations reaching seasonally average temperatures next weekend.

By Saturday, highs in the mountains and deserts will be running anywhere from four to eight degrees warmer than normal.
