One day after the Imperial Beach shoreline was declared safe, sewage runoff entered the Tijuana Estuary, contaminating nearby waters, county health officials said Sunday.

Sample results Sunday indicated the contaminated area now extends from the border north through IB, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality.

The county attributed the problem to runoff from the Tijuana River.

On Saturday, the department declared the shoreline safe for recreational use after it was closed following recent sewage issues. But signs warning of sewage-contaminated water were back up Sunday and will remain until sampling results indicate the ocean water is again safe, officials said.
