The Imperial Irrigation District Thursday said con artists have been reportedly going door-to-door claiming to work with the district and attempting to sell solar equipment.

The district reported that individuals are asking to see customer bills and electrical equipment in order to make sales.

The utility’s energy service area covers 6,471 square miles, including parts of San Diego and Riverside counties, and all of Imperial County.

“Customers are advised that IID has no affiliation or working arrangements with door-to-door vendors or telemarketers selling solar systems,” according to a statement.

This isn’t the first time IID customers have been targets of fraudulent activity.

In February and December, the district reported fraudsters were calling and emailing their customers, demanding they pay money immediately or risk having their power shut off.

Officials warned their customers that callers were masquerading as district employees and demanding immediate payment or other financial information.

Any customer contacted by anyone who claims to represent the district was urged to call the customer call center at 800-303-7756 or 760-335-3640, Monday through Friday.
