San Diego can expect fair skies and seasonal temperatures on Sunday before a cold Pacific Storm arrives in the evening with rain, snow and elevated surf.
“The showers could be briefly heavy, and snowfall will be locally heavy in the mountains through Monday night with difficult travel conditions,” the National Weather Service said. “The storm will move east on Tuesday, followed by gusty, dry, northerly winds and a slow warming trend into the New Year.”
Highs on Sunday before the storm are forecast to be around 63 near the coast, 62 to 67 inland, 56 to 62 in the mountains and 67 to 72 in the deserts.
Rainfall beginning Sunday night is expected to range from .5 to 1 inch along the coast and in the valleys, up to 2 inches in the mountains and less than a third of an inch in the deserts.
The cold system moving from the Gulf of Alaska will bring the snow level down to 4,500 to 5,000 feet by Monday morning.
The approaching storm will raise surf levels at area beaches, peaking Monday afternoon with sets of 9 to 10 feet in southern San Diego County.
