An Encinitas school custodian who suddenly needs to have his leg amputated because of a spider bite is gaining the support of hundreds of people.

Guil Aguilar, the evening custodian at Park Dale Lane Elementary School in Encinitas, was poisoned by a spider bite, causing him to need his foot and leg amputated, according to a GoFundMe campaign recently created for him.

Organizers of the campaign, which has raised more than $14,000, said Aguilar is the main provider for his family and encouraged the public to donate funds.

“I can’t even begin to imagine what he and his family must be going through right now, and when hardships arise, our community is best known for being uplifting and supportive,” said Melissa Scharbarth, who created the online fundraiser.

The campaign quickly made its rounds on social media, gaining more than 200 donors within days.

One couple, Karie and Chris Galindo, said Aguilar has helped their daughter and teachers in the past. “We wish you and your family so much love and comfort,” the couple wrote.

“Guil is a beloved member of the EUSD team and a ray of sunshine always,” wrote Leslie Wright.

“Thank you for all you have done for PDL. Wish you a speedy recovery and much love to you and your family,” wrote another donor, Raffaella Menghini.

The GoFundMe campaign hopes to raise at least $25,000.
