On Saturday the Lions Club of National City and the Friends of Rollo organization are teaming up at Dolphin Sportsfishing, Fisherman’s Landing, 2838 Garrison Street, San Diego, to take more than 50 children out to the ocean for a day of fishing and fun.

The event provides free fishing trips for children who might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience the beauty and splendor of the ocean. In addition to a fun day of fishing, youth are provided with on-the-water ocean preservation education where they learn first-hand about the precious ecosystem that exists in the coastal water off San Diego.

Since 1999, more than 130,000 children have been exposed to fishing and ocean preservation through this program.

Scott Sherman, who is a board member of the Friends of Rollo praised the two organizations for holding the event.

“As most know, fishing and the outdoors are a passion of mine. I was first introduced to the ocean as a child and without those experiences, I would never have understood the importance the ocean is to our precious ecosystem,” Sherman said. “I deeply appreciate the National City Lions Club and the Friends of Rollo for continuing this important tradition of education.”

The schedule is as follows:

  •                        12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Pre-boat launch activities
  •                         12:30 p.m. – Boat launch
  •                         12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Out to sea
