For the first time, the city of San Diego is giving the public the opportunity to show pride in its public libraries and in the LGBTQIA community with a special edition San Diego Pride-themed library card.
The card features a unicorn reading a book called “Be Yourself” while sitting atop of bookcase filled with rainbow-colored books.
The Pride library cards have a limited print run of 5,000 and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Patrons can pick up cards at any of the 36 San Diego Public Library locations beginning July 12 as Pride Weekend begins throughout the city.
“The San Diego Public Library is an inclusive space that fosters connections to knowledge and each other,” said Library Director Misty Jones. “The Pride library card is a wonderful way to celebrate these connections and the diversity of San Diego’s LGBTQIA community.”
A limited amount of Pride cards will also be available at the San Diego Pride Festival on July 13 and 14 at the library’s Lit Café area located near the entrance of the festival at Balboa Park. The Café’s performance area will also feature a number of activities including discussions with local authors, drag queen story time, arts and crafts, face painting and other family programs.
