San Diego ranks as the top U.S. city for recreation, with its bicycle facilities, numerous parks, and plentiful music venues helping the city stand out.
The ranking by the Washington, DC-abased financial services firm WalletHub was released just before the July 4 holiday. It graded the 100 largest cities across 48 metrics from the cost of movies to the number of tennis courts per capita.
After San Diego, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Orlando and Tampa rounded out the top five cities for recreation. Dead last was Jersey City, NJ.
San Diego ranked first for bike rental facilities per capita, 7th on parkland as a percent of the city’s land area, and 17th in music venues per capita
“Though it’s not among the most affordable cities, San Diego is this year’s best city for recreation as it offers plenty of choices in terms of parks, tourist attractions and public beaches,” said Jill Gonzalez, a consumer finance analyst for WalletHub.
“For those who are more active and adventurous, the city has some of the most bike rental facilities, fishing spots, walking routes, top amusement parks, boat tours and water sports per capita,” she said. “Other things that make San Diego a good destination are its food festivals, recreational centers, cuisine and wine tours.”
