Get ready for jammed highways and crowded airports as a record 3.35 million people travel over 50 miles in Southern California to celebrate Memorial Day.
“Despite gas prices near $4 a gallon, the Automobile Club of Southern California is projecting a new all-time record number of local Memorial Day travelers for the second year in a row,” the club reported.
The auto club is forecasting a 4.3 percent increase over last year in the number of holiday travelers. An estimated 2.78 million — or 83 percent of all travelers — are expected to go by car. Another 340,000 residents will fly, and 227,000 will take a cruise, bus or train.
San Diego will see many of those travelers as the auto club ranks America’s Finest City as the second most popular Memorial Day destination after Las Vegas.
If you’re driving, you can check the Caltrans website for current highway conditions. For airline passengers, the San Diego Airport lists current flight status on its home page.
