The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties announced Thursday that it raised more than $500,000 during its eight-day Shelter of Hope campaign, which concluded Wednesday.

The annual fundraising campaign brought in $501,500 for the Red Cross, the third consecutive year it has yielded more than $500,000. The money will benefit the organization’s services and programs that assist thousands of residents in the two counties each year. The Red Cross’ Women, Infants and Children program serves roughly 21,000 residents each month on its own, according to the organization.

“I’m so grateful to volunteers and donors who made this year’s Shelter of Hope a success,” said Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties CEO Sean Mahoney. “Every hour given and every dollar raised allows the Red Cross to continue to provide help and hope to families in need.”

The campaign aims to showcase the various services and programs it offers by visiting events around the county. During this year’s campaign, Red Cross representatives held events at the San Diego Humane Society, Petco Park and San Diego’s Old Town Market, among other places.

Throughout the campaign’s duration, Mahoney and the organization’s board members took turns sleeping on a cot in the Shelter of Hope’s simulated disaster shelter. The executives slept on the cot to experience what families experience when displaced by a natural disaster.
