Jewish Family Service of San Diego announced Monday that it received $205,000 in grants from Susan G. Komen San Diego to help fund its free in-home service for breast cancer patients.

JFS will use the first grant of $155,000 to provide care and assistance to more than 200 under served breast cancer patients by providing financial and transportation assistance and completing an assessment of needs for each patient. The organization will use the second grant, worth $50,000, to make visits to patients’ homes and provide referrals to various necessary resources.

According to the organization, many breast cancer patients in San Diego deal with issues like language and financial barriers that keep them from seeking treatment for breast cancer. Similar barriers can also lead to patients’ failure to adhere to treatment schedules because they may lack the means to consistently make visits to the doctor or afford childcare.

“At a time when energy should be directed toward medical care and healing, many patients spend their efforts locating and accessing help,” said JFS CEO Michael Hopkins. “The Susan G. Komen grant helps continue our efforts to provide effective assistance to under served breast cancer patients, allowing them to complete their treatments and improve their quality of life.”

Roughly six women are diagnosed with breast cancer in San Diego each day, according to JFS. Residents can find more about the organization’s Breast Cancer Case Management program online.
