Missing the way Comic-Con used to be? There are two cons this weekend where comic books are the focus, plus all the other happenings around town. Here’s your guide.
San Diego Comic Fest
It’s a San Diego comic convention founded by the same guy who founded Comic-Con but it’s not Comic-Con. Confused? Don’t be. Comic Fest was founded to give comic fans a convention reminiscent of the early Comic-Cons.
You’ll find everything you’d enjoy at a comic con: Panel discussions, an artist alley, tabletop gaming, cosplay, steampunk and an exhibitor hall full of comics, books, toys and collectibles.
The seventh annual San Diego Comic Fest goes from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $7.50 to $50.
International Mariachi Festival
This day-long festival is a chance for you to celebrate San Diego’s Mexican heritage through Mariachi music and colorful traditional ballet folkloric dancing.
Sponsored by the National City Chamber of Commerce and The Unified Port of San Diego, the seventh annual International Mariachi Festival & Competition features Mariachi groups from all over the United States and Mexico. It’s a grand celebration of the arts and culture.
The festival goes from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bayside Park in Chula Vista. Admission is free.
Best Coast Beer Fest
It wouldn’t be a San Diego weekend without a beer festival or two. Organizers say this beer festival is the most amazing “in the history of mankind.” There might have been a bit of exaggeration there.
But the Best Coast Beer Fest will definitely have beers from nearly 100 craft breweries on the West Coast. There’s also music from local bands and food from gourmet food trucks.
The festival goes from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Embarcadero Marina Park South. Tickets are $40 general admission and $85 VIP. Proceeds go to benefit Cuck Fancer, a support organization for young adult cancer patients.
SeaWorld’s Seven Seas Food Festival
Foodies and craft beer aficionados, this festival is for you. SeaWorld’s Seven Seas Food Festival opens this Saturday and features craft beer from local breweries with international cuisine from around the world.
You can sip and sample your way around the world of international street food traditions, craft beers and wines, and enjoy live musical performances along the way.
The Seven Seas Food Festival goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and on weekends through April 28 and free with admission to the park.
Despite the name, the convention isn’t just all about rockets. It’s about collectible toys and comics.
There are may unique vendors selling all sorts of geeky toys, statues, comics and games. There is also an artist alley filled with artists and cosplayers. There are also panels with creators.
Rocket Con goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Scottish Rite Center. Tickets range from $12 to $40.
