A $9.6 million project to upgrade the popular Shelter Island Boat Launch is in its final weeks and the facility should reopen to the public in December, the Port of San Diego announced.
The facility has been closed since September 2017 and its anticipated reopening delayed by the discovery of a number of large, buried concrete debris that had to be removed.
The work includes installation of 92 piles and 53 concrete wall panels to create an enlarged maneuvering area for boats. The worn-out launch ramp is being replaced, new floating docks installed and improvements made to public walkways, parking and restrooms.
The port said it appreciated the public’s patience during the work, which will make the facility safer and more navigable for boaters.
