San Diego Bayfair

The thunderous sound in Mission Bay this weekend can only mean that the H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Racing Series is returning to San Deigo.

Racers in the world’s fastest race boats jet down the 2.5-mile race course in Mission Bay for the Bill Muncy Cup, named for the late San Diegan and powerboat racer.

The event is family friendly with live bands, kids’ zone, specialty food vendors, and, yes, beer gardens. This year’s festival will also feature a newly added BBQ competition.

The 54th annual San Diego Bayfair goes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $20 to $150.

KAABOO Del Mar

Some of the biggest names in music, comedy and food are appearing this weekend at KAABOO Del Mar.

The three-day music, food and comedy festival features rapper Post Malone, singer Katy Perry and comedian Whitney Cummings among others. The chefs include Michelin star honorees, James Beard Award winners, and Iron Chef and Top Chef contestants.

KAABOO Del Mar goes from noon to midnight Friday through Sunday. Passes start at $149.

Swoop Freestyle World Championships

Look in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s not Superman, but rather skydivers with their high-performance parachutes just feet above San Diego Bay.

Some of the world’s best canopy pilots battle it out in the sky and across the water as they “swoop” through narrow, slalom-like courses at the Embarcardero Marina Park.

The Swoop Freestyle World Championships goes from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event is free to attend.

OMBAC Classic Longboard Surfing Contest

Surfing is part of San Diego’s DNA. This weekend, the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club takes it back to its roots — longboards.

All contests at the Classic Longboard Surfing Contests are required to use longboards from 1969 or older to catch a wave. The early morning surf contest is free to spectators. The registration fee for participants is $30 per person.

The Classic Longboard Surfing Contests goes from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Crystal Pier.

Margaritas Y Más Festival

Besides beer, tequila is the other beverage of choice in San Diego. This weekend, the inaugural Margaritas Y Más Festival is taking over the Chula Vista Bayfront Park.

The event features unlimited margaritas, tequila and mezcal tastings as well as savory food and live music.

Margaritas Y Más Festival goes from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $50 per person.

Old Town San Diego Fiestas Patrias

Mexico declared its independence from Spain on Sept. 16, 1821. This weekend, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is celebrating that part of San Diego’s history during the Fiestas Patrias.

San Diego and Alta California was still part of Mexico then. The festival kicks off with a parade that features the Escaramuzas, traditional women equestrians.

After the parade, there is a variety of entertainment, including historic and traditional music and dance groups, crafts, games.

Fiestas Patrias goes from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and is free to attend.
